A brief history of Harbor Club North & South Yacht Club

In 1995 Harbor Club, resident (and first Commodore) Herbert E. Williams expressed to the owners of Harbor Club North & South, a desire to start a yacht club.  Authorization was given along with their support.  Within the year, Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club received their charter as a non-profit organization.

In the desire to have the very best for Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club members, our magnificent little organization launched an all out effort to join Anchor Bay Yachting Association and Inter-Lakes Yachting Association.  The positive publicity brought Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club to the attention of the Eastern Michigan boating community and encouraged its members in their desire to participate and promote organized boating.

The club has a proud history steeped in the traditions of public service, promoting clean water activities, and safe boating education; upholding its tradition as an advocate of boating safety and spirit of fellowship and camaraderie.

Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club sponsors various social functions throughout the year.  The first major events are the Spring Coming-Out Breakfast and the Blessing of the Fleet.  Newsletters are sent out each month to the members with the calendar and schedule of events.  We encourage you to get involved.

Through the years, Harbor Club North & South Yacht Club members and officers have actively volunteered their efforts and made donations to many local area groups.  With the funds raised from the various events we put on, we are able to return this money back into the boating community.

Anchor Bay Yachting Association (ABYA) and Inter-Lakes Yachting Association (I-LYA) was opened to all member clubs on the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair; mainly as a social group to encourage fellowship between yacht clubs.  They have made it possible for Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club to participate in the reciprocal Pic of Northclubs.  This enables you to visit other clubs, participate in their activities and exchange burgees.  Nearly all Great Lakes Clubs including Canada allow Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club to use their facilities, in some cases at significant discounts for dockage and the like.  Your best bet is to call ahead to find out what is offered and available since it varies from club to club and the rules can change from time to time. Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club members who have traveled extensively report nearly universally warm receptions at the various clubs, when presenting their Harbor Club N&S Yacht Club membership cards.

We would like to thank and offer tribute to the resourcefulness and industry of many of our officers and members who have given unselfishly of their time and effort to build a better club for the future.

Please join us at the club meetings on the second Tuesdays of each month.
